Dem Annoying Upgrade Blues
So last week, I took the plunge and upgraded the venerable Sardonicus to Kubuntu Jaunty Jackalope. Overall, it seems fairly stable. KDE4 has a few differences that produce a bit of cognitave dissonance. The biggest problem I have is that some applications I'd come to rely on have simply dissappeared.

I keep my whole music collection on the computer. Originally, I used grip to rip and encode CDs, but when I moved to Kubuntu, I adapted to using KAudioCreator. And over the years, I'd tweaked it to my liking. So imagine my surprise when I discovered that it's simply not available in Jaunty. No problem, says I. The default is K3B, so how hard can this be?

As it turns out, it's a pain. The stock encoder line for Lame (yes, I still use MP3 because all my audio hardware will play it) simply fails. You need to check the 'Write Wave Header' and 'Swap Input Bytes' boxes. Then you need to add the track number to the Lame command line!

Oh, well. At least now it's configured and I can forget about it.
